Judo

Translated as "the gentle way."  Judo is an Olympic combat sport and martial art.

Judo is a dynamic combat sport that demands both physical prowess and great mental discipline. From a standing position, it involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw your opponents onto their backs.

Ground tactics include techniques that allow you to pin your opponents down to the ground, control them, and apply various chokeholds or joint locks until submission.

History of Judo

The true origins of Japan's martial arts are not well defined.  Many consider the takenouchi-ryu martial art system founded in 1532 to be the the origin of Japan's jujitsu forms. By the 1800's more than 700 different jujitsu systems existed.

In the 1850's America forced open the closed society of Japan.  The military ways of Japan went into a rapid alteration as the country modernized.

Jujitsu became less common as schools simply died out.  A physician name Jigoro Kano had been a student of multiple disciplines of Jujitsu.  He took this traning and molded it into a system of physical education and sport while preserving the core combative art.  In the late 1800's Dr. Jigoro Kano called his new style Judo.
